Newspapers have long been one of society’s most powerful tools for staying informed. For many families, the daily paper was a familiar and comforting part of the morning routine. Adults often looked forward to finding the newspaper on their lawn and catching up on the latest events, while children enjoyed reading through the comic strips or working through crossword puzzles with their parents. For decades, the newspaper was not only a source of information but also a shared experience that united people.
In recent years, however, the way we receive news has changed dramatically. Most people now rely on social media for quick updates and instant access to information. Although this method is fast and convenient, it often lacks the reliability, depth, and thoughtful storytelling that traditional media provides. The shift has left many wondering what has been lost as society moves away from printed journalism and toward constant scrolling.
Here at Oakdale High School, we believe that something meaningful is worth bringing back. This is why we are proud to introduce the Mustang Chronicle, a fully digital newspaper created to highlight the stories of our school community. Our goal is to explore the world around us, amplify student voices, and honor the legacy of Oakdale’s former student publication, The Arcadect.
During our research, Mustang Chronicle Staff discovered evidence showing that The Arcadect existed as early as 1940, and there may even be earlier accounts that have not yet been found. For nearly eighty years, it served as a platform for student expression and documented the life and culture of Oakdale High School. Its disappearance almost two decades ago marked the end of a long tradition, leaving behind a history that many current students never had the chance to experience.
Thanks to the dedication of several passionate students, that tradition is returning. We see ourselves as continuing a legacy that shaped generations of students, while also bringing a modern and engaging approach to school journalism.
As one of the newest clubs on campus, we are committed to keeping students informed about everything happening within our school and the surrounding community. We hope to create a publication that reflects the diverse perspectives of our student body and encourages thoughtful conversation. Our mission is to provide meaningful stories, highlight achievements, and offer a space where students feel represented and heard.
Thank you for choosing to read this introduction instead of doom-scrolling. Your interest and support mean a great deal to us. We hope you continue to read, enjoy, and share the Mustang Chronicle for many years to come as we work to rebuild a tradition that once played an important role in the history of Oakdale High School.
